UC Santa Cruz Concludes First Semester of Hacking for Oceans

In Spring 2020, UC Santa Cruz offered the first class of its kind focused on identifying solutions to key coastal and ocean problems using Lean Startup methodology.

The class focused on creating solutions to complex social and environmental issues, addressing climate change through the lens of oceans and their interdependencies with land, air, and energy systems. One of the main goals for the class was to have students learn lean innovation while coming up with new and creative ways to solve ocean problems.

The student teams this semester tackled problems ranging from 'Reducing bycatch in modern industrial fishing’ to ‘Harnessing the general public to support kelp forest conservation efforts’ and many more. To see their final presentations and MVP solutions to these problems visit their website below.
