David Riel
Distinguished Service Professor, Heinz College of Information Services & Public Policy, Carnegie Mellon University
David Riel joined Carnegie Mellon in 2006. In 2018 David was appointed as a distinguished service professor at the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy, teaching courses in Digital Transformation, Managing Digital Business, Hacking for Homeland Security & Defense, and Information Systems Capstone Synthesis.
David has also held teaching appointments with the Information Systems department at the Heinz College, and the Institute of Software Research as an instructor for the eBusiness Technology Master’s Program under the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.
David’s research interests include technology application to education (Web 2.0, LMS, synchronous platforms, automation, AI/ML, etc.), active learning methodologies (learning by doing, blended learning, flipped classrooms, team-based learning, etc.), and analysis of synchronous and asynchronous education through online mechanisms. David’s research also focuses on digital disruption (primarily in the digital business and academic aspects of education), through emergent technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), ePayment, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Blockchain, and Quantum Computing.
Prior to joining the Carnegie Mellon faculty in 2015, David has worked in many different facets of Information Technology including Software Engineering and Design, Network Administration and Engineering, Database Management, and IT Security across numerous industry sectors including fashion, architecture, healthcare, consulting and education.
